I would suspect that it has a lot to do with the fetal stem-cell argument that touched on the religious bias that many people possess. I think few really understand how stem cells can be cultivated and the last time most people heard much it was mid-abortion issue.
Japan typically gives more toward stem cell research than all of North America combined.
This stem cell stuff is fascinating. Why are we not funding this more aggressively?
